Xbox One Requires Internet Connection
On May 21 Microsoft's newest console, the Xbox One, was revealed in Redmond, Wash. After the press conference the always online rumor was dispelled, but sources also confirmed that an Internet connection is still required for the system to function.
A fact sheet released by Microsoft through their new press website, Xbox Wire, states "broadband Internet (ISP fees apply) and advanced TV hardware required."
Granted there is the caveat that the requirements "may change prior to release," this is just one more confirmation that Xbox One requires an Internet connection. However, if this is true, does it also mean that the some sort of TV hardware is required as well? In any case, this could be just a poorly-phrased sentence that someone overlooked and forgot to add "for specific functions" at the end of the sentence.
Kotaku later reported that Xbox One will be able to play offline, but will need to be connected to the Internet every 24 hours.
"For single-player games that don't require connectivity to Xbox Live, you should be able to play those without interruption should your Internet connection go down," vice president Phil Harrison told Kotaku. "Blu-ray movies and other downloaded entertainment should be accessible when your Internet connection may be interrupted. But the device is fundamentally designed to be expanded and extended by the Internet as many devices are today."
Just three hours later, in an attempt to clarify the situation, Microsoft told Polygon that though they can confirm that the system will require an Internet connection, connecting 24 hour requirement is just a "potential scenario."
